Enterprise Linux Weekly Snapshot

Following a New York Times story (subscription required) from a couple months ago, Russia announced this week it would reduce its dependence on Windows and work toward a national Linux-based operating system. As Katherine Noyes points out on NetworkWorld, we’ll have to wait to see how this unfolds given that this isn’t the first time Russia has said this. Noyes’ story includes some good information on what businesses can learn from this.

Another cloud alliance popped up this week, but this one could have the muscle to make real advancements in cloud computing and the data cener. The Wall Street Journal reports on the new Open Data Center Alliance being backed by 70 heavy hitters including Intel, Shell, BMW, Lockheed Martin and Deutsche Bank, among others.

IBM opened a new Cloud Lab for its partners this week in the UK. Partners can access and test new services from the lab and work on go-to-market plans and activities. This appears to be a good demonstration of how seriousy IBM takes the cloud and the value it places on its partners to help deliver these services to customers. ComputerWeekly reports.

Lastly, I don’t know about you, but I like to monitor how companies are doing with managing the “triple bottom line.” Local Tech Wire reports on IBM and Cisco ranking first and fourth respectively in the second annual list compiled by Gartner and the World Wildlife Federation and focused on sustainability among technology companies.
