The Linux Foundation Appoints New Chief Technology Officer, Open Source Community Veterans to Executive Team

Chris Aniszczyk, Mark Hinkle and Nicko van Someren bring more than 50 years combined open source and technology experience to collaborative development efforts

SAN FRANCISCO – February 11, 2016 –The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, today is announcing Chris Aniszczyk, Mark Hinkle and Nicko van Someren are joining the organization’s executive leadership team. These additions represent some of the best talent from the open source community and technology industry and will help drive The Linux Foundation’s mission to accelerate open development for the largest shared technology investments in history.

The contributions that Chris, Mark and Nicko have made to the open source community and technology industry are well known, and we’re eager to work with them to support open development.”

The Linux Foundation was established in 2000 and today provides the necessary services to enable mass innovation through open source. It provides training and certification resources, global conferences and hosts open source projects that span every corner of technology from Linux, the Internet of Things (IoT) and containers to networking, blockchain technologies, drones and more. As the organization has evolved to help drive collaborative development on a mass scale, it has united more than 500 of the world’s leading technology professionals to advance critical, shared technology infrastructure.

More about the new executive appointments:

Chris Aniszczyk brings more than 15 years experience as The Linux Foundation’s vice president of Developer Programs. He is currently acting as interim executive director of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation and will work to evolve how the Linux Foundation engages new projects and supports the development of open source at scale.  Previously Aniszczyk served as Twitter’s head of open source, where he led a team of developer advocates and was responsible for Twitter’s open source engineering, strategy and culture. He has also contributed to Gentoo Linux and served on the Eclipse Foundation’s Board of Directors and the Java Community Process Executive Committee. An engineer by trade, Aniszczyk brings a passion for both open source and community development to the organization.

Mark Hinkle will drive marketing programs and community relations as vice president of marketing at The Linux Foundation. Previously, Hinkle was senior director, Open Source Solutions for Citrix where he managed their Open Source Business office and their involvement in the Apache CloudStack and Xen Project communities. He also drove the strategy and execution of open source marketing efforts for Cloud.com, leading to its acquisition by Citrix in 2011, and grew the Zenoss open source software project to more than 100,000 members, which fueled its ascent into the Inc. 500 fastest growing businesses in the U.S. With nearly 20 years of experience, Hinkle is a marketing and open source expert experienced in growing open source communities, spawning demand for emerging technologies and creating catalysts for user-led adoption of new technologies and services.

Dr. Nicko van Someren is The Linux Foundation’s chief technology officer. He will lead the Core Infrastructure Initiative as well as other Linux Foundation security-focused efforts. Dr. van Someren has extensive experience across the security and networking industries. Most recently, he was the chief technology officer of Good Technology where he oversaw future technology strategy and research. Prior to joining Good he served as chief security architect at Juniper Networks where Dr. van Someren was responsible for leading the technology and design direction for the company’s Network Security products, as well as promoting Juniper’s security solutions to industry and government sectors. Before joining Juniper, he was founder and CTO of the security technology company nCipher Plc. Dr. van Someren holds a doctorate and First Class degree in computer science from Cambridge University in the UK. He is a fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the British Computer Society.
