Linux Foundation will award five scholarships and host a student-focused day at LinuxCon designed to help train the developers who will shape the next 20 years of computing

SAN FRANCISCO, June 7, 2011 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced its new Linux Training Scholarship Program and Linux Learners’ Student Day.

The Student Day will take place at LinuxCon in Vancouver, B.C. on August 16, 2011 and includes transportation on the “LinuxCon or Bust” bus for students and faculty traveling from Corvallis and Portland, Ore.

Both programs are aimed at training the next-generation of Linux developers as Linux approaches its 20th anniversary.

Scholarship Program Puts Investment in Today’s Most Promising Linux Talent

The Scholarship Program will award five scholarships to computer science students and Linux developers who show incredible promise for helping to shape the future of Linux but do not otherwise have the ability to attend Linux Foundation training courses.

Each scholarship will cover the expense for one course from The Linux Foundation’s course schedule in Linux Development, a value averaging more than $1,000. Example courses include:

• Embedded Linux Development
• Embedded Linux Development: A Crash Course
• Embedded Linux Development with Yocto Project/OpenEmbedded
• Developing Device Drivers
• Linux Kernel Internals and Debugging
• Developing Applications for Linux
• Developing with Git
• Introduction to Linux for Developers
• How to Participate in the Linux Community

Applicants are invited to fill out a brief submission form online at: http://training.linuxfoundation.org/linuxtrainingscholarships. Submissions are due by 11:55 p.m. PT on July 12, 2011 and will be reviewed by The Linux Foundation. Recipients will be notified late July or early August, just prior to LinuxCon.

According to IT recruiting job site Dice.com, demand for Linux-based software development skills continues to outpace other areas of IT recruitment. The Linux Foundation is helping to meet this demand by providing Linux training opportunities that increase job seekers’ portfolio of skills and depth of knowledge related to Linux. The new Linux Training Scholarship Program is expected to increase the reach of these training opportunities to address the growing demand for Linux-related skills while investing in today’s most promising Linux talent.

“The demand for Linux-related IT talent clearly demonstrates the increasing adoption of Linux in the enterprise, on the mobile and across the Web. Helping to increase developers’ knowledge of the most cutting-edge Linux skills to support this trend is a natural role for us to play,” said Amanda McPherson, vice president of marketing and developer programs at The Linux Foundation. “We’re investing in the future of Linux with our new Scholarship Program and are happy to extend our unique Linux training opportunities to developers who might not otherwise be able to take advantage of them.”

The Linux Foundation’s Training Program offers classes for developers and systems administrators and can be taken in multiple locations around the world, online, or through custom training workshops specially designed for companies. This technically advanced, cost-effective and vendor-neutral training experience is built in collaboration with the Linux Foundation’s Technical Advisory Board (TAB), which comprises leading maintainers from the Linux community. Linux Learners’ Student Day, “LinuxCon or Bust” Bus Caters to Up and Coming Linux Talent

The Linux Foundation will also be supporting the professional development of computer science students and Linux developers by co-hosting with Oregon State University’s Open Source Lab (OSUOSL) the first ever Linux Learners’ Student Day at LinuxCon.

The Student Day will take place at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver, B.C. on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, just one day prior to the opening of LinuxCon, which takes place August 17-19, 2011. The full-day program includes sessions on Linux Basics, Introduction to Python and Embedded Systems, among others.

Students can attend Linux Learners’ Day for free when they register for LinuxCon at the discounted student rate of $100. To review the program and register to attend Linux Learners’ Day, please visit: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon/student-program

Attendees of the Linux Learners’ Student Day are invited to join The Linux Foundation and OSUOSL on the “LinuxCon or Bust” bus that will be transporting students and faculty from Corvallis and Portland, Ore., to Vancouver, B.C. The bus will depart Corvallis on Monday morning, August 15, 2011 and will return Saturday, August 20, 2011.
