The Linux Foundation Announces LinuxCon and CloudOpen Schedule, New Keynote Confirmations

Linux creator Linus Torvalds confirmed for Linux Kernel Panel; event sessions and keynotes to help define open cloud, forecast future of cloud computing and Linux development

SAN FRANCISCO, June 21 2012 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced the complete program and new keynote confirmations for LinuxCon and CloudOpen, taking place together in San Diego, Calif., August 29-31, 2012.

This is the debut year of CloudOpen, which is the only event dedicated to open source, standards and APIs in the cloud. It is designed for software developers and IT managers responsible for deploying and developing cloud solutions and will cover all major open cloud technologies. The event is being run in parallel with LinuxCon North America, which is the world’s leading conference addressing all matters Linux for the global business and technical communities.

Keynote Sessions to Deliver Both Technical and Business Insights on Future of Linux, Open Source and Cloud Computing

The latest keynote confirmations for LinuxCon and CloudOpen include:

  • Linux creator Linus Torvalds has been confirmed to join the exclusive Linux Kernel Panel moderated by James Bottomley, CTO of Server Virtualization at Parallels. This panel will include key kernel maintainers who will share the results of discussions that take place at the co-located Kernel Summit.
  • The event will kick off with a keynote panel that will attempt to define the open cloud for further collaboration during the week. Red Hat’s Gluster Community Manager John Mark Walker will moderate a panel that includes representatives from Citrix, Eucalyptus and OpenStack who will discuss how the open cloud is being defined, including perspective on the cloud stack, platforms and the role of open source software.
  • Veteran technology executives from Canonical, Google App Engine, and Opscode will debate IaaS vs. PaaS in a keynote panel titled “IaaS vs PaaS: Composite Primitives for Building in the Cloud.”
  • HP’s Bdale Garbee, CTO of Linux and Open Source, and Richard Kaufmann, Chief Technologist of HP’s Cloud Services will discuss the intersections for HP’s Linux and cloud strategies.
  • Senior Director of Cloud Computing at Citrix, Mark Hinkle, will speculate on the evolution of cloud computing in a keynote titled “The Cloud in 20 Years.”
  • Intel’s Director of Open Source Technology Center Imad Sousou will talk about importance of Linux at Intel.
  • SUSE’s Michael Miller, Vice President of Global Alliances, will deliver a keynote on building private clouds titled “Service Oriented Clouds: Responding to Lines of Business.”
  • Canonical Vice President of Cloud at Canonical Kyle MacDonald will present “Open Cloud: Collapsing the Layers.” 

Previously confirmed keynotes include Twitter’s Chris Aniszczyk, Qualcomm Innovation Center’s Rob Chandhok, former HP executive and author of “Beyond the Obvious: Killer Questions That Spark Game-Changing Innovation,” Phil McKinney; and Jim Zemlin.

“The LinuxCon and CloudOpen events are providing a unique, neutral forum where the most important technical issues and content can be presented and discussed,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “Collaboration begets the best technologies, and we’re looking forward to what will result from this year’s powerhouse of Linux and cloud events taking place in San Diego this August.”
