Move reflects ongoing commitment to the open source community

SAN FRANCISCO – MARCH 6, 2017 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit advancing professional open source management for mass collaboration, announces VMware has become a Gold member of The Linux Foundation. VMware is a global leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility.

VMware has been involved in open source for years, by contributing to existing open source projects as well as open sourcing some of the company’s own code. This includes significant participation in and contributions to Linux Foundation projects such as Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP), Cloud Foundry and Open vSwitch, as well as other open source projects including OpenStack.

Becoming a Gold member of The Linux Foundation will enable VMware to become even more active in the open source community by leveraging The Linux Foundation’s experience and expertise in how to most effectively contribute to and utilize open source technology.

“VMware has underscored its commitment to the principles of open source development,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director, The Linux Foundation. “The open source community will benefit from VMware’s wealth of talent and resources as we collaborate to solve technology challenges from the data center to cloud infrastructure and beyond.”

“VMware looks forward to working more closely with the open source community, and we know this involvement will enable even ever better solutions and services for our customers,” said Dirk Hohndel, Vice President and Chief Open Source Officer at VMware. “As a Gold member, we are committed to increased interaction with and contributions to the community.”

Gold membership is the second highest membership tier at The Linux Foundation and demonstrates a significant commitment and investment in open source. Other Linux Foundation Gold members include Accenture, Blackrock, Citrix, Dell EMC, Doky, Facebook, Hart, Panasonic, Renesas, SUSE, Toshiba and Toyota.
